Selecting the Right Boat for the Right Job.

January 2005

Are you ready to buy your first boat?  Where do you start? What are the most important issues to consider?  How do you choose the best boat for your needs?  Let’s look at some of the things to consider as you search for that dream boat.

Marine Surveys 03/06/04

Surveying a boat is something done by a professional, licensed Marine Surveyor to determine the value and condition of a vessel. What is a survey? A survey places a value on the vessel and within given restraints, examines and inventories the entire vessel. The surveyor should not be drilling holes or removing bulkheads or causing damage to do his job.

Anchor Types, Rode and "Ground Tackle" 10/31/03

There are essentially three main types of anchors: the plow, danforth and mushroom, and variations of each which may appear in many shapes and forms. The anchor rode, that is the combination of chain and rope and used to lower an anchor, have also vastly improved from the original twisted vines and hemp to three strain twisted nylon which is both chafe resistant, shock absorbent and with a high tensile load capacity.

Anchoring 10/30/03

Whether you're anchoring for lunch, a swim, fishing or overnight the process should remain the same. Variables are "bottom type," "current," "wind," "water depth," your "gear" and the proximity of other vessels. All anchoring gear should be tested and set up in the ready state before you leave the dock. Many people put their anchor gear away after use in the ready mode. Communicate to each crew member involved and often to those that must stay out of the way, what you intend to do "step by step."
